Categories

Each team chooses one category. Choose the one that best fits the problem you want to solve. The example problems below are ideas to help you start; your team can choose any real problem that fits the category.

A. Blue Economy, Environment and Climate

Zanzibar's ocean, coasts and land: fishing, seaweed farming, water, waste, energy, weather and the changing climate.

Example problems:

  • Helping small-scale fishers plan safer trips with weather information.
  • Sorting and reducing plastic waste on beaches and in markets.
  • Saving water at home or at school.

B. Learning, Kiswahili and Inclusion

Learning for everyone: reading, numeracy, study skills, the Kiswahili language, and students with disabilities or who are left behind.

Example problems:

  • A Kiswahili reading or spelling helper for younger students.
  • Revision support for a subject that many students find hard.
  • Making lessons accessible to students with visual or hearing impairments.

C. Health, Wellbeing and Community Services

Health, safety and everyday services in the community: clinics, nutrition, hygiene, mental wellbeing, transport and local services.

Example problems:

  • Shorter queues or clearer information at a local clinic.
  • Simple nutrition or hygiene advice in Kiswahili.
  • Helping families find and use community services.

D. Creative AI: Arts, Culture and Tourism

Creativity and heritage: music, art, storytelling, Swahili culture, history and visitors to Zanzibar.

Example problems:

  • Telling the story of a historic place in Stone Town or Pemba.
  • A tool that helps local artists or tour guides reach visitors.
  • Recording and sharing traditional songs, recipes or crafts.

Using AI responsibly, in every category

Whatever you build, think about who could be harmed and how to prevent it: protect people's privacy, check the AI's answers for mistakes and bias, and be honest about what the AI did. Responsible use of AI is one of the seven judging criteria, and has its own award.
